I have a series of videos I’ll be uploading over the course of the next week regarding the wiring and install of the Heezy HTS15 transfer switch.
Today the video is how to wire a generator transfer switch to a gas furnace. If you have done any electrical work before, this video might be a little slow and seem simple. It’s over 30 minutes long and I’ve tried going into detail about everything you need to know about wiring a generator transfer switch to a gas furnace.

I’m in the process of replacing the Drivers Door Window Motor, which happens to contain the control system for the trunk and fuel door release. As I have a week before it gets here I thought I would seek out how to manually open the fuel door. Searching online led to various ways to do it, with no clear knowledge. On the older VW Jetta’s there was a manual way to open it in the trunk. On our 2006.5 Jetta TDI there isn’t.
So I have finally gotten around to replacing our terrible lighting in our basement. In the video I go through removing the old porcelain light fixture and wiring in new recessed lighting boxes, complete with basic wiring. I was able to do this in about 35 mins while doing all the video, hopefully after watching this you can get this done in a short period of time. After the first one I got the other 5 done in around an hour.
Today I want to give you a basic Sequence Of Operation for a standard gas furnace aka 80% Efficiency furnaces. This will not apply to every single one out there but typically will cover about 90% of what you will find.
I wanted to start at the top with some basic electricity for everyone. If you have never had any experience with electricity than this series will be good for you to follow. Q: What is Electricity? A:It’s a general term used to describe the presence or flow of an electrical charge.
For our purpose of we are just going to cover electricity as it relates to the artificially produced power that we have in the United States: 120/240VAC 60Hz.
VOLT: Voltage is measured in VOLTS and is abbreviated V, The electrical symbol for voltage is E but sometimes you will find it listed as V
Wiring your gas furnace to a generator is a project that’s frequently either over-thought or not thought of at all. Some people think you need a high dollar transfer switch wired to your breaker panel, thus requiring a Electrician or you have to temporary rewire the breaker to the generator for temporary power and then rewire everything once the power comes back.
But this isn’t the case, NEC (National Electric Code) simply requires that appliances must be on their own dedicated circuit. By simply rewiring your furnace you can have the ability to use your furnace by powering it with a portable generator.
